Excitement filled the air as the Champion Civic Action awardees were revealed at the Olelo Youth Xchange Video Competition Awards Ceremony and Reception, held on May 15 at the Hawaii Okinawa Center Legacy Ballroom. AJS Executive Director Sylvia Yuen and Robert Nakatsuji presented leis, certificates, and monetary prizes to the winners, along with two finalists from each school level—elementary, intermediate, and high school.
The honorees represented schools from both Oahu and the Neighbor Islands, with one standout institution earning multiple awards:
- Gov. Sanford B. Dole Middle
- Mayor Joseph J. Fern Elementary
- Honowai Elementary
- Waipahu Elementary
- Kamehameha Schools Maui (3 awards)
- Kealakehe High
- Highlands Intermediate
A total of 31 entries were submitted, and a distinguished panel of judges selected the winners, finalists, and Certificate of Distinction recipients. The video competition is part of an ongoing promotion of civic education by AJS and the PACE Commission, and the selected videos will be featured in the Civic Education Repository on both their websites.
If you are interested in viewing the winning videos, they will be aired on ‘Ōlelo Channel 53 on May 18 at 10:00 p.m., May 20 at 4:00 p.m., and on May 22 at 9:00 a.m. The program is two hours long, and the civil action category winning videos for elementary, middle, and high school levels are at the program’s start. If you wish to watch the awards show, it will be aired on ‘Ōlelo Channel 53 on June 7 at 6:00 p.m., June 9 at 4:00 p.m., June 11 at 9:00 a.m., and on June 15 at 10:00 p.m.
